Already the 8th of July and I'm finally feeling like my form is coming back after the disaster that was May and early June. The availability of races at this time in the season is quite limited; in fact, I only have three, possibly four races left on the calendar at all. Next weekend, actually Friday and Saturday of next week is the Capitol Reef Classic Stage Race in the Torrey, Utah area. None of the stages feature any sustained climbing, but it is a stage race, after all. The base elevation is quite high, however, with all three stages hovering in the plus/minus 7,000 foot range. Friday features an 8 mile individual time trial in the morning, then a hilly 17 mile road race in the afternoon. Saturday has a 52 mile road race. I was third there last year.
Mount Whitney Update:
As of 7/8/11 the results at USA Cycling don't show any ranking points for several individual riders, and several entire classes of riders, including mine (60+). I should have received 55 USA Cycling points in stage racing from this, which would put me in second place nationally, just shy of first. I've emailed the ranking/results director (Tom Mahoney), but he hasn't responded. I've also been in contact with the race director. I'm hoping that this will be cleared up soon. In the meantime, I'm unofficially 2nd in the United States in my ten year age category in stage racing, with two more stage races to go, including the daunting Everest Challenge in September.

Some serious miles there, despite the injury. Don't you hate having so much fitness left at the end of race season? I wish you all the best for the upcoming races. Will you have a fair chance to crack 1st?

ReplyDeleteAnd this is my love hate with Crit racing. There is a ton of them, but I would love to be able to participate in more true road races. Good luck and great job thus far.
ReplyDeleteGroover - I'm not done with contesting the USAC points issue yet. With a podium at the Capitol Reef stage race, and a podium at the Everest Challenge, I should have an insurmountable lead! Well, that's what I'm hoping for, anyway.

TRI714 - I used to live in SoCal, and the gradual loss of road races over the years was bad enough, but then the Criteriums became shorter and shorter. Grr! So I feel your pain, to reuse a old phrase!
